A landmark video game from the end of the 1990s, “Baldur’s Gate” is back with a third opus created by the Belgian studio Larian. Offering impressive gaming freedom, this new episode of the saga is already cited as one of the best games of the year.

The “Baldur’s Gate” saga began in 1998 with the release of a first video game inspired by the “Dungeons and Dragons” universe, followed in 2000 by a second which was considered one of the best cRPGs ( computer role-playing video game) of the story. After four years of development, “Baldur’s Gate 3” was finally released at the beginning of August on PC and available since September 6 on PlayStation 5.

Developed by Larian, a Belgian studio known for the “Divinity” saga, the third episode of this great heroic fantasy adventure takes up the spirit of the previous two, while bringing new features in terms of gameplay such as the arrival of 3D . The story still takes place in the magnificent settings of the Forgotten Realms, but takes place approximately a century later. No need to know the world of “Baldur’s Gate” to embark on this new quest.

Total freedom

The great strength of this new opus lies in the immense freedom of play offered to players. This begins with the choice of character which is made from around thirty races and sub-races (elves, half-elves, humans, orcs, dwarves, etc.). From the start, each character already has a past and characteristics (flaws and advantages) that are specific to him and which will influence the course of the game.

Likewise, each decision made will have consequences on the rest of the adventure. Enough to personalize each part – including the ending – which will resemble neither the previous nor the next and to make “Baldur’s Gate 3” a game in which you are truly the hero.

Acclaimed by critics and the public

It is this total or almost total freedom of gameplay that particularly appealed to critics and early players. But the game convinces at almost all levels. And the few technical hiccups spotted during its launch are being corrected.

After just a few weeks, “Baldur’s Gate 3” has already surpassed the impressive figure of 5.2 million copies sold on PC. Furthermore, it became the highest rated video game of the year reaching an average of 97/100 on Metacritic, a site which compiles the ratings given by specialized media.

But before launching into this current success, it is better to know that “Baldur’s Gate 3” is a terribly long game. We are talking regarding 75 to 100 hours to reach the end. Full of violence, torture and sex, it is also intended for ages 18 and over. But as long as we adhere to these principles, “Baldur’s Gate 3” is one of the video games not to be missed this year.
