The Sustainable Health Program hosts Dr. Yasser Khairbek, consultant in general psychiatry and chief physician at Orgomont Psychiatric Hospital in Argenteuil, France, to open a file: How do we reach the establishment of balanced and healthy relationships within the same family?

A recent study indicates that strained family relationships may lead to depression

A recent American study revealed that people’s strained relationships with their mothers and siblings in middle age increase their likelihood of developing depression.

This study was conducted by researchers at Iowa State University, and published its results in the scientific journal Social Sciences. They reached these results after studying data on differences within the same family.

The research team’s analysis included 495 adults, and the researchers measured symptoms of depression and stress among family members through questions asked of them.

The researchers found that a strained relationship with mothers and siblings can lead to feelings of depression. The team also found that the relationship between mothers and daughters gains greater importance. Therefore, depression rates were stronger among females than males, when their relationships with their mothers were strained.

But the researchers did not find a difference in the depression index in a person’s relationship with his brother or partner. Females and males are equally susceptible to depression when their relationships with siblings and life partners are strained.

Research team leader Megan Gilligan said: “Relationships with our mothers and siblings change as we become adults and begin independent lives with our families, but the quality of those relationships still affects our lives and well-being, especially in middle age.”

She added, “Stressed relationships with our mothers and siblings are linked to our becoming depressed, just like our husbands. The study has proven that our relationships with our mothers, husbands, and brothers have a similar effect.”
