CULIACÁN.- Dozens of wounded, more than 30 dead and at least 32 detained is the balance, so far, of the internal war of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The conflict between two factions of the Cartel adds up to eight consecutive days of violence in Culiacan.

This Tuesday, the general Luis Crescencio Sandoval, holder of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) spoke for the first time about the conflict.

It is presumed to be an internal war between the faction controlled by the sons of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman and the one loyal to ‘El Mayo’.

“Since July 25, when ‘El Mayo’ Zambada was arrested in the United States, the Security Cabinet took some precautions to keep an eye on what was happening.”

The authorities had already anticipated a confrontation between the factions of the Pacific Cartel: ‘Los Chapitos’ and ‘The Mayos’.

The general said that 2,200 members of the Armed Forces were deployed to Sinaloa in order to capture the Mexican drug lord in the face of a possible increase in violence in the area.

There were also reinforcements from the National Guard and the Navy Secretariat to contain insecurity in northwestern Sinaloa, a historic stronghold of the cartel of the same name.

According to Tuesday’s report, the military deployment included 50 ground vehicles, six T-6 military aircraft and four artillery helicopters.

In addition to the arrests, 115 long weapons, 14 handguns, two grenades, a rocket launcher, 14 armored vehicles and a cloned patrol car have been seized.

They also made sure bulletproof vests, ammunition, radios and tactical equipment and marijuana, opium gum, cocaine and methamphetamines were seized.

“We were monitoring for five weeks and there was no activity that indicated a confrontation. In the sixth week, we did start to have data,” said the general about the beginning of the wave of violence.
