Azerbaijan’s Yashar Najafov won in -66 kg during the first day of the Grand Slam in Baku on Friday.

Local judo fans were enthusiastic, cheering on local judokas and participating in activities organized by the local federation.
In the under 48 kg category, world number 1 Assunta Scutto faced local favorite Leyla Aliyeva. Although Aliyeva put up an incredibly tough fight, the Italian superstar ultimately took home the gold.
“Even though I’m tired, it’s a great result for me because it means I’m improving and I’m so happy for this gold medal” said Assunta Scutto.
Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Mariana Vasileva presented the medals.
The under 60kg category saw Gamzat Zairbekov and Ramazan Abdulaev compete. After a close final and a waza-ari, the opponents and friends closed the match by hugging each other – a true demonstration of the values of judo.
IFJ Vice President Laszlo Toth presented the medals.
In the under 52 kg category, Kisumi Omori fought determinedly once morest Olympic lightweight champion Distria Krasniqi in a close fight. Tactical victory went to Japan.

In the under 66 kg category, local hopes were numerous. Yashar Najafov faced Takeshi Takeoka. Just 13 seconds into the match, he won gold with an uchi-mata. The crowd went wild, impressed by this astonishing demonstration of judo.
“I wanted to win this medal because I am at home, and I did it. Azerbaijanis love judo, everyone was watching. Thank you very much for your support” commented on his victory Yashar Najafov.
The medals were presented by the Secretary General of the NOC of Azerbaijan, Azer Aliyev.

In the last category of the day, Nora Gjakova faced Eteri Liparteliani. The Olympic champion won with a waza-ari.
Florin Daniel Lascau, the IJF Chief Referee Director, presented the medals.
Azerbaijan has always been known for its passion and talented judokas, and today’s team certainly lived up to that reputation.
