Norris and Piastri hope to do better in the race

Lando Norris set the seventh fastest time in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, but he believes he might have done better. The McLaren F1 driver estimates he lost almost three tenths, which would have sent him to the second row without problem.

“I made a mistake in turns 1 and 4, so my first sector was probably three tenths of what it should have been” regrets the Briton. “If I had managed to improve by a tenth, that would be four positions.”

“So mixed feelings because the car was getting better and better as qualifying went on, especially when the wind died down, the car came alive and things were going well, it was nice to drive it .”

“I just didn’t do what I should have done. If you had told me we might be second before this weekend, I would have been surprised. But it was possible, so it’s a good thing for us as a team.”

Asked what he expects from the race, the Briton is confident of being able to show good things with an MCL38 which should be more comfortable on Sunday than on Saturday: “I was told that he had to do more hot tomorrow, so that’s something I’m not looking forward to.”

“I haven’t done more than 12 or 13 laps in a row yet because we had some problems during practice. We learned a lot from my stints yesterday, I learned a lot too, the pace is good and We saw last year that our race pace was strong in most conditions.”

Oscar Piastri will accompany his teammate on the eighth row on the starting grid, and the Australian did not regain the ease of FP2 when it was time to attack with the MCL38.

“It was a tricky session. I struggled throughout the session, the car doesn’t feel like it did last night and we need to understand why. It’s tight, I think we’re pretty much in the right group but it’s tight” indicates Piastri.

“I don’t think Red Bull will be as fast as everyone feared too. I hope it kicks off an interesting year, we’re happier than where we were last year. It was a tough session but we’ll see.”
