The Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) is eagerly anticipating a significant podium finish at the upcoming Olympic Games set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028. This optimism is fueled by a groundbreaking initiative launched by its parent organization, the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), aimed at enhancing the competitive edge of badminton in Nigeria.
Titled “Road to LA 2028,” this comprehensive, athlete-centric program developed by the BCA is designed to stimulate and inspire Nigerian and other African badminton players to reach for greater accomplishments at the next Olympics, setting the stage for a new era of sporting excellence.
In collaboration with the BCA, the BFN strongly believes that outstanding achievements are attainable through timely and robust preparation. According to BFN President Francis Orbih, who also serves on the BCA Council, establishing an Olympic contender—and ultimately a champion—requires diligent, long-term commitment rather than instant results.
“That explains our quest for early preparation, bolstered by our continental parent body (BCA), for this remarkable initiative,” Orbih stated, emphasizing the purpose of this program to elevate African and Nigerian badminton to unprecedented levels of success.
The boost in morale can already be seen following Nigeria’s Eniola Bolaji clinching a medal at the recent Paris 2024 Olympics, making her the first African badminton player to achieve such a feat. “We want to build on that momentum, particularly with Anuoluwapo Opeyori’s historic appointment as Team Nigeria’s Captain, which underscores badminton’s maturation in the country,” remarked Orbih.
This marks a landmark achievement, as it was the first time in Nigeria’s 18 participations that a badminton player held the prestigious title of Team Nigeria Captain.
The “Road to LA 2028” initiative is strategically designed to inspire and support African badminton players, offering them the resources they need as they work towards achieving glory at the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The highly anticipated launch event is scheduled for December 1st at the Kano Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. “As Nigeria hosts this momentous occasion, we will also celebrate the remarkable achievements of Nigerian badminton and para badminton athletes at the recent Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics,” Orbih noted proudly.
This initiative will concentrate on identifying and nurturing young talents, providing exceptional training facilities, and securing crucial resources to ensure African athletes are thoroughly equipped to face their global competitors.
“As a Nigerian, I am immensely proud of our athletes’ exemplary performances at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, and I am confident that the BCA’s initiative will motivate them to achieve even greater heights at LA 2028,” Orbih expressed with enthusiasm.
Emphasizing the importance of support, he continued, “The ‘Road to LA 2028’ campaign embodies the BCA’s commitment to uplifting African athletes by giving them the necessary tools to unlock their full potential. We invite the entire nation to join us on this exhilarating journey.”
The event is expected to attract a wide array of critical stakeholders, including Governors, government agencies, corporate sponsors, media representatives, and badminton enthusiasts, all coming together to show their support for this transformative initiative.
