The decision has been made in the 2024 Landscape Gardener Cup: Mika Lerch from Thomas Heumann GmbH (Weinstadt) and Bastian Maichle (Fellbach) from Link GmbH took first place. The team from the Baden-Württemberg State Association for Garden, Landscape and Sports Field Construction prevailed against strong competition at the leading international trade fair GaLaBau in Nuremberg on September 13, 2024 – and can now bear the title of “German Champion”.

Second place went to Kilian Hilgers and David Widl, both from Widl Garten- und Landschaftsbau (Postmünster), Bavaria. Third place went to Lukas Bützler and Luca Burghof, from Pütz GaLaBau GmbH (Wipperfürth), North Rhine-Westphalia.

On September 12th and 13th, a total of twelve teams took on the challenging competition task of designing a natural (front) garden. This put not only the participants’ craftsmanship skills to the test, but also their technical knowledge – and of course good teamwork.

24 trainees, 15 hours, 24 square meters – one task

Within 15 hours, the 24 trainees cultivated and planted a four by four meter section of the garden and with their top performances once again showed that they have a lot to offer as future specialists in gardening and landscaping. During the exciting hours of the competition, the young women and men delighted both the audience and the jury with their design of a diverse miniature garden with a tree. Ultimately, the team from Baden-Württemberg was able to convince with its result.

The current trends in gardening and landscaping were also present in this year’s professional competition: biodiversity and climate-friendly garden design were important components of the competition task. The plan designed by landscape architect Michael Epple thus addressed the requirements that garden owners, but also cities and municipalities, face in terms of garden design in times of climate change.

The aspiring landscape gardeners were faced with the challenge of designing a small section of the garden in a way that was close to nature and would provide a refuge not only for people, but also for flora and fauna. A wall specially built by the participants was to invite people to sit and linger; a walkway was to lead to a large insect hotel, the Tower of Life. But specialist knowledge of various plants and solitary trees was also required: a planting area consisting of three levels offered various site conditions that had to be assigned and planted. A competition task that examined both the theoretical and practical skills of the future specialists.

Great praise from the President

Thomas Banzhaf, Chairman of the Training Support Association for Garden, Landscape and Sports Field Construction (AuGaLa) and President of the Federal Association for Garden, Landscape and Sports Field Construction (BGL): “What these young women and men have created here within 15 hours is evidence of the highest quality and great passion for our profession. This shows once again what excellent specialists we have. I congratulate all 24 participants on their great achievements. All participants can be proud of this. On behalf of the BGL and our training support association AuGaLa, I would like to thank our expert jury for their commitment before and during the Landscape Gardener Cup 2024.”

The jury, led by spokesman Ludger Plaßmann, is made up of experienced experts such as business owners and trainers from all 12 regional associations. During the “German Championships” they assessed the creation of the gardens according to the rules of technology and determined the winning team and the other placings. In 2024, the task was more demanding than ever, said Plaßmann: “Everyone here is a winner. Because those who took part in the nationwide landscape gardeners’ cup have already won their landscape gardeners’ cups at the state level,” said Plaßmann. The jury spokesman then thanked long-standing jury member Peter Emmerich, who had been involved in the cup events for over two decades. As a token of gratitude, Plaßmann presented him with an honorary jury jacket.
