As of: September 27, 2024 4:30 p.m

The alliance “Together for Diversity and Democracy” is organizing the protest against two AfD state party conferences in Ulm. Up to 1,000 people are expected at the first demonstration.

The new Ulm Alliance for Diversity and Democracy is organizing the protest against the AfD’s two state party conferences. The partly right-wing extremist party is expecting up to 1,500 members from all over Baden-Württemberg in the exhibition hall on the first weekend in October and on November 9th and 10th.

Protest rallies at the trade fair and a demonstration in the city center are planned for Saturday, October 5th. The mayor of Ulm, Martin Ansbacher, and the Protestant regional bishop Ernst-Wilhelm Gohl have also been announced as speakers. Afterwards, there will be silent protests with posters and red cards “against hatred and incitement” during the AfD party conference, according to the organizers at their press conference on Friday.

Peter Langer: “The AfD has no place in this city”

Our democratic constitutional state and our diverse society are under pressure because that is exactly what the AfD wants to destroy, explained Peter Langer, one of the speakers for the new Ulm alliance. “It is an absurdity that the AfD is holding such a meeting in the city of Albert Einstein and the Scholl siblings,” said Langer.

The cross-generational alliance of almost 90 organizations wants to show that there is no place in Ulm for the AfD and for inhumane slogans, emphasizes Ella Oswald from the Ring of Political Youth, which is a member of the alliance. According to Oswald, the difference to the other parties is that “it does not represent democratic values.” It is “not a safe party just because it is democratically elected,” argues the politics student.

The Ulm Alliance for Democracy is also protesting against the AfD with posters. This wants to hold two state party conferences in Ulm in October and November.

Silent protest in November with posters and red cards

A silent but visible protest with posters and red cards against hatred and incitement is planned for the second AfD party conference in November, according to the organizers.

The alliance distributes these free of charge at three locations: in the Ulm trade union building, in the European Danube Academy and in the city’s equal opportunities department. The Ulm Alliance for Diversity and Democracy currently includes almost 90 organizations and 60 private individuals.

Nominations of the AfD candidates for the federal election

At the two party conferences, the AfD wants to nominate its candidates for the upcoming federal election in Ulm’s Donauhalle. According to its own information, the party has 6,200 members in Baden-Württemberg, and the trend is rising.
