Kailua-Kona (dpa / lsw) – Despite a mixed season so far, triathlete Maurice Clavel is going into the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii on Saturday with great ambitions. “My goal: Top 10,” said the 34-year-old from Freiburg in an interview with the “Badische Zeitung” (Wednesday). “As always, the starting field is top-class,” emphasized Clavel. “Although multiple winner Jan Frodeno is missing this year, there is Kristian Blummenfelt, the reigning world champion, a Magnus Ditlev, the winner of Challenge Roth, a Patrick Lange, who has already won here twice.” He expects a “great race”.
For Clavel, who had to cope with a severe stroke of fate in the family and a corona infection at the beginning of the year, it is already the third World Cup start in Hawaii. When he last competed three years ago, he had been in the lead for a long time, but then he lost his strength on the bike. “I overdid it, didn’t divide my forces well,” said Clavel. “I won’t make that mistake once more this time.” This time he wants to approach the race “more cautiously and more controlled”, “ultimately smarter”.
