Bad weather: Over 400 lightning strikes in Attica in two hours – 2024-07-07 06:38:51

Rains and storms have been manifesting since the morning in many areas of the country, with the phenomena of bad weather express having already manifested in the north of Attica, Macedonia, areas of Central Greece and Samothraki.

Already, in many cases, flooding phenomena have occurred, while dry lightning has caused fires, as a result of which the Fire Department hastened. Over 400 lightning strikes were recorded by the network of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo in Attica and mainly in the Northern and Eastern suburbs within two hours, as the Research Director of the Observatory Kostas Lagouvardos told protothema.gr.

Where weather phenomena occur

In Attica, at 15:00 in the followingnoon, light rain was present in Porto Rafti, Pallini, Rafina, Koropi and Spata. Earlier, heavy rains had occurred in Dionysos, Agios Stefanos and Spata, while rain fell in Agios Stefanos. Rain fell at 16:00 in the followingnoon in Elefsina and a little later in Perama. Korydallos and Faliro.

Rain also fell in Avlida, Chalkida, Thebes, Neo Palamas Fthiotidas, Amfikleia and Tragana, while the effects were weaker in Amfissa, Paleochori, Parnassos, Tanagra. Heavy rain also occurred in Elassona.

In Agios Stefanos the highest amount of rain

According to meteo.gr, from the bad weather until the first noon hours of Thursday, the northern parts of the prefecture were mainly affected.

The image published shows the rain heights recorded by the stations of the network of automatic weather stations of meteo.gr / Athens National Observatory until approximately 14:00.

Where did the lightning strike?

As can be seen on the map, in the area of ​​Attica many lightning strikes have already appeared, with the fire brigade rushing to wherever a fire is detected.

In white you can see the lightning that fell around 1:30, while in yellow those that fell earlier.

Already at noon in Attica, 112 was activated.

Lightning caused fires

At the same time, the Fire Service announced that “due to intense lightning activity in Dionysos, Anixi, Marathon, different fire outbreaks occurred in forest areas. Ground and air forces were mobilized.”

The Fire Department is in full mobilization due to the cases of fire caused by lightning and the flooding phenomena caused by the heavy rainfall in the northern suburbs of Attica.
