BAD WEATHER such as strong winds and high waves are still hitting the waters of the Malacca Strait, Aceh Province. That is why some traditional fishermen using wooden boats or motorboats are still postponing going to sea.

As a result, the price of fresh sea fish in the Malacca Strait coastal area is also getting higher. The locations where the price of fresh sea fish has increased are, among others, Pidie Regency, Pidie Jaya, Bireuen, North Aceh and Lhokseumawe City.

Media Indonesia’s observation, Saturday (29/6) at the fish market in Sigli City, the capital of Pidie Regency, for example, the price of tuna from two weeks ago was Rp25,000 per kg, now it has increased to Rp35,000 per kg. Then dencis fish, from previously Rp20,000 per kg, has now increased to Rp35,000 per kg.

Next, the price of mackerel, from Rp25,000 per kg, has now soared to Rp40,000 per kg. Then the price of medium-sized shrimp from the previous Rp60,000 per kg, has increased to Rp80,000 per kg. While the price of large tiger prawns from Rp120,000 per kg, has now increased to Rp130,000 per kg.

“All types of fish are currently experiencing a price increase. This is because the production of fish by fishermen in the Malacca Strait off the coast of Aceh has decreased. Many fishermen are afraid of being hit by storm waves,” said Abdul Muthalib, a fresh fish trader at Pante Teungoh Market in Sigli City, Saturday (29/9)

He said that the high price of fresh sea fish is directly related to the bad weather conditions in the Malacca Strait. Because small fishermen who usually go to sea after dawn and land around noon, now have to cancel their intentions.

They are afraid to do activities because the wave height ranges from 1 to 2 meters. Added to that, strong winds often occur suddenly, making it difficult to find a safe place in the open sea.

Traditional fishermen on the southern coast of Malacca, hope that the unfriendly weather conditions will end soon. Because the cessation of the activities of hundreds of traditional fishermen greatly affects the price of fresh fish.

Moreover, for the economic life of small fishermen, it is quite felt. Because even though the income from sea fishing activities is constrained by the weather, but expenses for family living needs including children’s school fees cannot be avoided.

“Not only are mainland residents buying fresh sea fish at high prices, but the income of small fishermen has also stopped because it is difficult to go out to sea,” added Mukhtar, a fisherman in Pusing Village, Kematian Kembang Tanjung, Pidie Regency.
