Bad sound? How to improve the quality of your TV speakers

Current smart TVs are beautiful with their thin edges that practically disappear, giving the impression that there is nothing around the display (screen, panel) that can be OLED, mini LED, among other technologies used. Due to this adopted design, if the manufacturer places the speakers behind the screen, as happens in the vast majority of TVs, there is no way to use a solution that brings good performance due to some reasons that we will explain below. There are a few ways to improve the sound quality of content displayed on TV and we will mention the best ones to help you with this task.

Why do current TV speakers sound so bad?

The reason today’s TV speakers often sound so bad is because of the size of the dynamic drivers (speakers) and their quality. This involves the focus of the product itself and also the need for a certain characteristic to reproduce certain frequencies satisfactorily in order to have a good immersion.

Although it is possible to reproduce the sounds of movies and series with honest quality using small speakers, this has a high cost and as the main objective of a TV is not to have the best possible sound but a good quality image, manufacturers prefer adopt more basic (bad) solutions. In addition, the size of the speaker will compromise the ability to reproduce more “full” and “deeper” bass, as there needs to be a greater air displacement to better reproduce this frequency range.

As the mids and highs are not as dependent on large speakers to be reproduced with good quality, the sound quality of these frequency ranges is usually good on most current TVs. That is, the sound of dialogue voices (medium) and glass shattering (treble) in scenes from movies and series will sound good, for example. However, the sound of explosions, which depend on bass performance, will be seriously degraded.

Another factor that will influence the performance of TV speakers is their placement. Unfortunately, there’s no way to position them at the correct angle for greater sound clarity, a larger soundstage, and a higher level of separation. The result of correctly positioning speakers is clear in a stereo (or stereophonic) speaker system, where you have two channels (right and left), and even more so in a home theater system, where you have the use of surround sound technology, which can be achieved using four or more audio channels.

How to Significantly Improve the Sound Quality of Today’s TVs

To significantly improve the sound quality of current TVs, the ideal is to use a pair of speakers, but if you want to benefit from surround sound technologies with Dolby Digital and DTS encoding with their various variants, a home theater system can be the best way. It is important to point out that most soundbars are a limited solution to obtain the best possible quality for the price charged, as they do not allow you to adjust the angle of the speakers and consequently there will be a loss of performance in reproduction compared to the aforementioned solutions. here.

If you don’t want to spend a lot to improve the sound of your TV, a cheap alternative is to reuse that old mini system that has RCA inputs for auxiliary sound. To use this connection, you will need a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) that has an optical (TOSLink) or coaxial (S/PIDF) input and an RCA output such as the FiiO D03K.

Bonus tip: Listen with one or two wireless Bluetooth headphones on your TV

If there is no way to use speakers due to the time of day, where people are usually sleeping, an interesting solution is to use wireless Bluetooth headphones to listen to the sound of your TV. For this, you can use a Bluetooth transmitter/receiver, for example, the FiiO BTA30which allows the user to receive the audio signal from the TV via an optical or coaxial connection and connect up to two Bluetooth headphones at the same time.
