The Final Fantasy saga is certainly legendary numbered episodes including Final Fantasy 16 recently released in June 2023, all obviously with a French version today. But it is far from being limited to that. Spin-offs, mobile games, fighting games, even rhythm games, we can no longer count the number of smaller games linked to the main Square Enix saga.

There was a time when many of these games weren’t even available in Europe at all and remained exclusive to Japan. Then over time, some of these games saw their version appear in the West, sometimes with a French version. But this time seems to be over given recent announcements from Square Enix, who decided to end the localization of some of their gamesand take a clear direction for the future.

A new direction for Square Enix?

The information was relayed by Finaland, a site dedicated to Square Enix news for many years. The Japanese giant has decided to remove the localization of the very popular mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and its tactical mode War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius for French, German, Korean and Spanish languages from April 2024.

In addition to this, they also announced total or partial closure of other gamesas SINOALICE, Dragon Quest Tact In Occident, Final Fantasy Wars: The Complete Works, NieR:Reincarnation in Southeast Asia, and Full Metal Alchemist in Japan. A change of direction, particularly with regard to mobile gaming, where it seems that too many resources have been allocated according to them, and that new objectives are necessary.

The latest famous mobile game exported to the West, FFVII: Ever Crisis was already the beginnings of it, since even if it was available from us, only an English version was available. And we should have considered ourselves lucky, because at the time, we wouldn’t even have been entitled to it!

Thank you Mr. Director

All these changes are probably linked to the new thinking head at Square Enix since 2023. Takashi Kiryu was elected new CEO of the Japanese company and is already bringing his share of freshness to Square. Younger than his predecessors, passionate about Final Fantasy above all, his direction was clear from his introduction: focus more on AAA and premium experiences, even if it means abandoning mobile games and other spin-offs somewhat. 2024 will be a year accompanied by big changes at Square, particularly with AI which is becoming more and more all the rage, and which they have announced they will use aggressively if necessary to further improve their creations.

It remains good to remember that there are of course no concerns to have regarding the French versions of our dear big numbered episodes. The immense Final Fantasy VII Rebirth expected on February 29 as well as FFXIV: Dawntrail will obviously have their French version if you wish, as well as the big episodes which will follow them.
