Bad Gastein: Four passers-by rescue a young man from an ice-cold stream

Four locals saved the life of a young man in Bad Gastein. He fell over a steep slope into an ice-cold stream.

“We just reacted”

It was the cold, foggy Sunday morning of February 25th when Kathrin Oberbichler, her mother Elfi Oberbichler, Albert Pichler and Ludwig Schweiger were out and regarding in the Kötschachtal district of Bad Gastein. Winter gave another strong sign of life, as it had snowed heavily the day before.

When they suddenly heard cries for help, they reacted quickly and discovered a young man lying in a ditch in a stream with icy water. “We saw him lying there and then we just reacted,” remembers Elfi Oberbichler. “We heard the cries for help and immediately ran,” adds her daughter Kathrin. Together with another passerby, they helped the injured man back onto the street and made an emergency call. They then wrapped him in several emergency blankets and put him in Ludwig Schweiger’s car to keep him warm.

Pilotage and handover

When the Red Cross rescue workers arrived soon followingwards, the first responders guided the ambulance to the patient. They explained the previous assistance to the rescue team so that the rescue team might take over seamlessly. “The precise explanations gave us a quick overview. That was very helpful,” said paramedic Lisa Warga.
