On Instagram Océane Sorel, doctor of virology, offers tips to protect yourself from bacteria on a daily basis. In the kitchen, she advises in particular to keep an eye on tea towels and sponges.

A specialist in the fight once morest bacteria and other viruses, Océane Sorel, doctor in virology and immunology, distils her valuable advice on social networks. Better known as The French virologist on Instagram, she recommends frequently cleaning certain kitchen utensils, such as sponges and tea towels.

The latter “little by little become a breeding ground for bacteria” if they are not sanitized frequently, warns the virologist. However, these micro-organisms can “transfer to the work surface, the table or even the dishes” and cause food poisoning.

The National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES), cited as a source by the virologist, confirms: “it must be considered that a contaminated surface can contaminate all the surfaces with which it enters. in touch”.

The agency cites “hands” as “the medium that best allows microorganisms to circulate in the kitchen” but also identifies “other vehicles” including dishcloths and sponges. To avoid this, Océane Sorel recommends an unstoppable weapon: heat, and therefore advises washing your tea towels regularly “at more than 60° C, in the machine”.

Concerning sponges, the virologist offers two techniques. The first is to wet them before putting them in the microwave for two minutes and at maximum power. A trick that obviously should not be done with a metal sponge, as there is a risk of injury or damage to the device.

As an alternative, The French virologist suggests heating the sponge in a pan of water. She then advises putting out the fire “as soon as the water boils”.
