Backward compatibility has existed for 17 years on PlayStation consoles, but it cost too much for Sony, which quickly forgot the idea at the time.

If today we can play PlayStation games from older generations once more on our PS5 thanks to a backward compatibility system, and with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, in reality, we might already play PS2 titles with the very first models of the PS3.

Backwards compatibility on PlayStation consoles has been around for a long time!

Published here in France in March 2007 for a rather excessive price, we’re not going to lie (599 euros), the first models of the PlayStation 3 actually allowed us to play our PlayStation 2 games thanks to a backward compatibility system. Were concerned here the CECHAxx (60 GB) and CECHBxx (20 GB) models which then had the Emotion Engine as well as the Graphics Synthesizer, i.e. the CPU and GPU of the PlayStation 2. As a result, it was possible for players to play their favorite titles from the old generation on the PS3, but unfortunately this did not last very long.

Indeed, even if this technology was welcome by players and made it possible to avoid losing PS2 titles, the manufacturing cost was rather high and this undeniably had an impact on the price of the console (PS3). Over the month, Sony therefore made the decision to gradually replace these models with others, putting an end to this backward compatibility system. definitely with the release of the 40 GB CECHG01 and CECHH01 models, released in November 2007 and March 2008 respectively.

This PLAYSTATION®3 system model is designed to play PLAYSTATION®3 format software and has limited backwards compatibility. This system is not compatible with and will not play PlayStation®2 format software. Some PlayStation® format software can be played on this system. For more information, visit playstation.com.

Prices more exorbitant than ever!

With the gradual withdrawal of the first models of the PS3 which then made it possible to play PS2 games, the second-hand market has literally exploded on the console side, with PS3 machines displayed at totally exorbitant prices.

For example, on eBay it was not uncommon to see one of these first models at a price close to double its initial price, i.e. more than 1200/1300 euros, and naturally, these were sold all the same, without too much surprise.
