The British workshop Electrogenic facilitates the conversion of classic cars into electric cars by developing kits that can be installed using the factory mounting points, so the conversion is easy and can be reversed if the customer chooses. The latest such conversion kit for the DeLorean DMC-12 was made. After the success of the Back to the Future movies, it’s no wonder that 75% of the approximately 9,000 DeLoreans produced are still in circulation.

In this case, the battery-electric conversion not only enables local zero-emission transport, but eliminates the biggest flaw of the construction, the underpowered: the factory-installed PRV V6 block has 130 horsepower, which takes more than 10 seconds to reach 100 km/h reaching speed – and as we know from the movie, reaching 88 mph (142 km/h) is a big challenge.

Electrogenic installs a 218 HP/310 Nm drive motor and a battery with a total capacity of 43 kWh in two parts (at the front of the gas tank and at the back above the engine) – 40 kg more weight than the factory one, but with better weight distribution. The drivetrain designed by Lotus can handle the heavy load without any problems. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes less than 5 seconds with the DeLorean DMC-12 electric car, which can be easily reproduced, as Electrogenic is offering automatic transmission here for the first time.

Thanks to brake energy recovery, the practical range exceeds 240 km with one charge. Lightning charging is also possible, and with the appropriate adapter, the car is also suitable for 3 kW (240 V) output. In the first customer car, a digital display was even installed in the instrument cluster – which, in addition to information, enables smartphone mirroring – Electrogenic specialists also installed an improved air conditioner in the DeLorean DMC-12.
