And cross-platform too
Super Smash Bros. owns. One of the biggest and most niche competitive scenes in any fighting game, but every title has been cursed with shoddy online play for over a decade.
Late last year we covered a software engineer by the designation hyphenWho was he Working on changing net undo code for Nintendo Switch emulatorsAnd now he’s bragging regarding bringing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to the physical console itself.
In his new development update, DShad explained that he went from trying to create the undo function in the Yuzu Switch emulator to creating a mod that works on anything that runs on Smash Ultimate.
This is apparently achieved with the Skyline plugin system, which allows users to load their code into games without having to hard open it.
DShad showed footage of an online match of Smash Ultimate being played between the Switch and the emulator on PC, which is very interesting to watch.
As promised, more details on the current optimization of undo mods for Smash Ultimate.
First watch the video (apologies in advance for my English ????) and read the summary information below. pic.twitter.com/CIxCSsrBL7– DShad (@DShad66) March 12, 2022
Just because the model works technically does not make it ready for general use. However, as DShad explains, this implementation is still in the proof-of-concept stage, although it looks promising so far.
The video shows one of the most difficult problems to overcome so far, turning off the sync from the emulator and not correcting itself.
Dashad says he can’t promise now that that dream will eventually come true and has moderate expectations, although he still believes it should be possible with more work and knowledge.
The previously shown model might have worked with any fighting game running on Yuzu using footage from Dragon Ball FighterZ and Samurai Shodown, but current work is solely focused on Smash Ultimate at the moment.
If you want my reasoning, I think it’s still possible for now as long as I fix the error I already have + final state of recovery (stock, time, mess,…)

The designer believes that this method will be easier to maintain once it is fully realized, but getting to this point is the hard part.
Rollback on Switch has been shown to work well in fighters like Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, although the choice is still pretty slim as incoming network code updates for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax don’t make it to Nintendo will come whether order.
To get something like this working on the Switch itself, users would need to modify their consoles, which is difficult to recommend without proper knowledge and understanding of the possible consequences (e.g. banning from official Nintendo servers).
However, it’s impressive to see that the rollback works not only in Smash Ultimate, but also cross-platform between the actual Switch and the simulator.
It looks like DShad has made significant strides in just a few months, and it’s going to be very difficult when it pays off.
Of course, with no mod development schedule, Smash fans will have to wait and see if other fans’ involvement will make that one day a reality.
