The father, who is a previous offender with convictions for domestic violence, will appear before the Charleroi council chamber on Wednesday to determine whether he will continue to remain in custody.

A man was charged and placed under arrest warrant on Friday for attempted murder of his two-week-old infant, the Charleroi prosecutor’s office said on Saturday morning, confirming information from Sudinfo. The accused evokes the accidental thesis of a fall from the couch.

The facts took place on Thursday rue des Déportés in Courcelles (province of Hainaut). The infant’s mother had gone shopping, leaving the child with his father. When she returned a few hours later, she discovered her baby’s worrying state of health. “At first, she found nothing out of the ordinary. The baby was sleeping in his playpen, she hadn’t especially approached him“explains Sandrine Vairon, divisional prosecutor at the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office. “Later, she realized that her child’s breathing was a problem. Things rushed, the mother called for help and the baby was taken to the emergency room“. The prosecutor specifies that the child has numerous and serious lesions all over his body. Given the severity of the lesions, the baby was transferred to a specialized pediatric emergency service. According to the latest news, Saturday noon, the child is always between life and death.

The infant’s father was heard Friday, charged and placed under arrest warrant for attempted murder. “He will appear on Wednesday before the Charleroi council chamber, to confirm whether or not his continued detention. The father evokes the accidental thesis, affirming that the infant would have been the victim of a fall from the couch. But there are variations in his statements“, further specified the prosecution.

The father is known to the courts. He has already been convicted, in particular for domestic violence. At the material time, he was serving his sentence under electronic surveillance.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our society. The actions of this father are shocking and deplorable, and our thoughts are with the infant and their mother during this difficult time. We hope that justice will be served, and that steps can be taken to prevent such a heinous crime from happening once more in the future.
