American Emma Lewis Chipili, 35, was woken up in the early hours of this Friday (15/12) in a frightening situation. Her little more than a year old son was being strangled by his mother’s hair.
The two slept together in bed, and Emma woke up to the child crying, who mightn’t breathe due to the tightness of the wires in his throat. Her husband had to use a knife to cut the woman’s hair, and the boy was urgently taken to the hospital.
The little one had to be transferred to a health center in another state, and is doing well. “It was the scariest moment of my life”, says the mother, in an interview with the local press.
As difficult as it is, especially for young children, pediatricians ask that parents not sleep with their children in the same bed — one of the consequences, although rare, is hair tourniquet syndrome, which happened to Emma’s son.
According to the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP), although rare, the syndrome represents a risk to the health of babies, as, in extreme cases, amputation of the necrotic area may be necessary. In situations of persistent crying, both parents and doctors should remove all of the child’s clothing and check whether there are any hairs stuck to the ends.
The recommendation is that babies sleep in a crib, a safe and appropriate surface. In addition to the mother’s hair, the environment in which the child sleeps hides other dangers, such as sudden baby death syndrome. It is characterized by suffocation during rest and can be caused, for example, by the space between the mattress and the crib, cloths, sheets, pillows and blankets.
SBP also recommends that the child be placed in the crib face up. Different positions can compromise breathing and leave you vulnerable to sudden baby death syndrome.
Similar case happened to baby in Pakistan
The case of the American baby is not isolated. In July this year, a mother in Pakistan’s hair accidentally got tangled around her 11-month-old son’s penis and almost resulted in the loss of the member. Doctors were able to repair some of the damage and inserted a catheter so the child might pee once more.
