Baby fractures skull after falling out of bed at nursery

A serious accident occurred in a crèche in the municipality of Schaerbeek on Thursday 10 November. A six-month-old baby fell from a crib that had obviously not been closed. He suffers from a fractured skull.

The information is confirmed by Gaëtano Termine, chief of staff of the alderman of the crèches of Schaerbeek. “Unfortunately, a child fell out of a bed last Thursday. He fell on his head and fractured his skull. Everything has been done according to the rules of the art to take care of this child and the ONE (Birth and Childhood Office, Editor’s note) was directly informed of this incident”he explains.

An internal investigation was carried out by the general management. “This kind of incident can unfortunately happen. A nursery nurse left the gate open and the child fell. It is obviously dramatic. This is a childcare worker who has worked for ten years in the non-profit association and who has never made the slightest mistake. A report was made against her and she received a warning“, specifies Gaëtano Termine. “The child was very quickly seen by doctors who felt he could go home. He won’t have any after-effects or trauma from his fall, but it’s clear that this kind of accident should never happen.”

For its part, ONE explains that it was made aware of the situation on Wednesday. “The situation is well managed by the organizing power. This is an accident resulting from an unfortunate oversight by an experienced childcare worker. The child has come home and he is recovering“, concludes Sylvie Anzalone, spokesperson for ONE.
