Journalist Mélanie Déchalotte and reporter-cartoonist Pierrick Juin retrace, in this comic strip, the affair of the armless babies, made public in 2018. The story begins in Ain, in 2010, with the alert of Dr Laurin. The latter notes, among his patients, the birth of four babies with transverse agenesis of the upper limb, the name of the pathology. Despite the subsequent reporting of clusters in several other departments, the public authorities remain inactive. And the families have, to date, had no information as to the cause of these malformations. The comic explores the trail of water and pesticide pollution and focuses on the contempt displayed by the public authorities. It reveals, for example, the setbacks ofEmmanuelle Amar, epidemiologist and director of the register of malformations in Rhône-Alpes, which launched several reports without success. The whistleblower explains in particular that Public Health France applied fallacious methods of calculating cases, by operating an absurd classification, without making the slightest temporal-spatial analysis. All this to finally conclude to the non-existence of clusters linked to water pollution. In the same way, Annie Lévy-Mozziconacci, genetics doctor in Marseille, underlines the difficulty of getting the public authorities to agree to put in place the tools to have transparency on these environmental causes. On the pesticides side, the comic strip details, among other things, the tips and tricks of agrochemists to circumvent the legislation. We thus follow the trail of thiacloprid, a neonicotinoid developed by Bayer Cropscience to control aphids. It is also known to be an endocrine disruptor, responsible for the collapse of bee colonies.
