Azerbaijan has submitted an official application to join the BRICS bloc, which, in particular, includes Russia and Iran.
This was announced by the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Aykhan Hajizade, Ukrinform reports with reference to Report.az.
“Azerbaijan has submitted an official application for joining the BRICS,” the message reads.
The publication notes that on July 3, within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in Astana, the “Joint Declaration on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China” was adopted.
According to point 4.5 of the declaration, Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS, while China welcomed Baku’s participation in the group’s cooperation.

The BRICS group, which brought together developing countries, was created in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined it in 2010.
As reported by Ukrinform, at the beginning of January, the BRICS group officially accepted five new members – Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.
