The decision was officially announced at the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). World leaders at the meeting intensively discuss the fate of fossil fuels.
In Azerbaijan, whose economy is heavily dependent on oil and gas exports, the COP29 meeting will be held from November 11 to 22 next year.
The published document indicates that COP28 accepted Azerbaijan’s proposal to host the summit in 2024.
The list of candidates was significantly reduced after Russia said it did not want the meeting to take place in a European Union country.
Azerbaijan overcame a major hurdle last week when its arch-rival Armenia announced it was withdrawing its bid to host COP29 and said it would support Baku.
The Caucasus neighbors have been at loggerheads for decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which Azerbaijan recaptured after a lightning offensive against Armenian separatists in September.
Brazil, one of the ten largest oil producers in the world, proposed to host the COP30 conference in the Amazon.
The COP30 summit will take place from 10 to 21 November 2025. It is expected that by the time of this conference, countries will have already improved their commitments in the field of climate change.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has promised to end deforestation by 2030. Earlier this year, Brazil also announced its plans to join the ranks of oil-exporting nations OPEC+.
At the COP28 meeting, the president indicated that he intends to tell oil producers to reduce their use of fossil fuels.
