Ayotzinapa case: AMLO will speak the “truth”

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has pledged to tell the truth and provide progress reports on the investigation to the families of the students who disappeared in Ayotzinapa in 2014, with whom he will meet today.

“As always, respect. Telling them the truth, informing them how the investigation is going,” he said during the tour he made yesterday with the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum.

His statements come amid a climate of growing tension after a letter was released last week that López Obrador sent to the parents of the 43 missing students in which he defended the Armed Forces.

In the letter, the president accused human rights defenders, international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS), U.S. government agencies, opponents and journalists of seeking to weaken the Mexican Army and launch a campaign to discredit it.

In response, the parents published another letter in which they criticize the president for “deceiving” them and contradicting the version of the Truth Commission, created by the current Government, which in 2022 concluded that the incident was a “state crime” in which the Armed Forces participated.

Meanwhile, the president again discredited the versions that link the Army as an institution with the disappearance of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa.

He insisted that if the Armed Forces are accused of this crime, evidence must be provided to support it, although he also stated that “he will not grant impunity to anyone.”

The president has said that the nearly 20 soldiers who are linked to the case were involved due to omissions or because they are linked to organized crime.

She also said that if no progress is made, she will leave the case in the hands of Claudia Sheinbaum, who has also promised to meet with the parents of the missing youths.
