It’s been a few months in heaven for mobile gamers, with an array of amazing PC gaming handhelds to choose from, and more on the way. Now, Ayaneo has released the Next Lite device, which is the first third-party handheld game console running SteamOS. It dares to directly compete with the original Steam Deck, and it naturally has its own advantages.

As announced on the official Ayaneo website, Next Lite will come pre-installed with SteamOS, the same operating system used by Valve’s own Steam Deck. Ayaneo also said that it will provide excellent cost-effectiveness to help lower the barrier to entry for players, suggesting that Ayaneo may directly compete with competitors with more competitive prices.
Despite its cost-effective design, Ayaneo doesn’t seem to have compromised on the Next Lite because of it. It will be equipped with a Hall sensor joystick, which is standard configuration of other high-priced handheld devices. In addition, it is also equipped with a 7-inch 800P high-brightness screen, a 47Wh large-capacity battery and an X-axis linear motor, and has a stylish and colorful design. In the announcement, Ayaneo did not reveal the actual retail price of Next Lite, but did say that anyone interested can visit the website when subscriptions open at 9:30 pm ET on January 11, 2024.

Next, it will be interesting to see whether the Ayaneo Next Lite will help the company climb to the top position in the portable device race. When we compared the Ayaneo 2 to the Asus ROG Ally, the latter won by a slim margin, with the affordability being an important difference. If the Ayaneo Next Lite can lower the price of the Asus ROG Ally, it could find itself in a very strong position relative to its competitors.
