Canadian mining company Aya Gold & Silver Inc. announces production of 1,970,646 ounces of silver at its Moroccan Zgounder silver mine in 2023.
“I am extremely proud of our operations team for delivering another year of production outperformance at Zgounder,” declared Benoit La Salle, CEO. “Not only did we exceed production guidance for the third year in a row, but 2023 was a record year, with silver production of almost 2 million ounces. This important milestone was achieved during a year of transition as we complete the expansion of our Zgounder mine to quadruple our production and continue drilling at Zgounder and Boumadine. We are on time and on budget with commissioning in the second quarter and full ramp-up by the fourth quarter of 2024.”
Operation of the Zgounder open-cast mine began in 2023. The planned production rate of 500 tonnes per day (t/d) was reached in October. Production from the underground mine accelerated to 1,300 t/d in November. In December, the combined mining rate of underground and open pit mines exceeded 2,300 t/d. “This gradual increase in mining rate is in line with our mining ramp-up plan,” the mining company said.
Higher plant throughput, particularly at the flotation plant, resulted in 281 kt being processed in 2023 compared to the guided 245 kt. Sustained recoveries and plant availability resulted in total production of 1.97 M oz, exceeding the planned 1.7-1.9 M oz. Additionally, the flotation plant was shut down for maintenance for six days in December 2023 to ensure a smooth start of operations in 2024.
Aya will report its year-end and fourth quarter 2023 financial and operating results before the market opens on March 28.
