Axenstrasse, which connects Flüelen UR with Brunnen SZ, was reopened to traffic on Wednesday morning. The section of the A4 national road was closed on Tuesday evening following the instruments that monitor the Gumpischtal, which is at risk of falling rocks, triggered the alarm.
According to a statement from the Federal Roads Office (Astra), the rockfall occurred on Tuesday at 7:35 p.m. The stones were caught by a dam and did not damage the road. After an inspection of the site from a helicopter, Axenstrasse was reopened to traffic at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
During the closure, through traffic had to use the A2 (Luzern and Seelisberg tunnel). During the closure, access was possible on Axenstrasse from the south to Tellsplatte and from the north to Sisikon UR and Riemenstalden SZ.
Axenstrasse is repeatedly closed to be on the safe side, most recently on August 2nd. The Gumpischtal is notorious for rockfalls. It is equipped with safety nets, dams and an alarm system to protect the road. The latter ensures that the road is blocked immediately if rock material moves. (SDA)
