The third “Giovanni Zarrella Show” was all regarding love. Only with Howard Carpendale did the moderator really put his foot in it.
It all started so beautifully. The Schlager icon had to wait a full two years to join Giovanni Zarrella to finally perform the duet “Call me an” – a German version of the Ronan Keating ballad “Life is a Rollercoaster” – live (yes, actually live!). Howard Carpendale was over the moon. But then the conversation between the two hit stars took an unpleasant turn.
Giovanni asks an embarrassing age question
Because Giovanni’s next question to the 76-year-old is worded a little unhappily: “You’re a bit older than me and your age… that at your age people are still trying to correct… I find it really remarkable that you’re still watching your performances and still thinking: ‘What can I do somewhere else?’. What is there anything to fix?”. Awkward!
But Howard just smiles – and casually counters: “First of all, I have to prepare myself for my next life!”. In addition, a three-hour show is not just a series of songs. “I’m a bit old school when it comes to stuff like that,” said the “Hello Again” singer. For him, a concert is “a personality show,” “I’m not so good at acrobatics,” admits the 76-year-old, slightly out of breath.
Howard counters nonchalantly
In his live shows, the focus is more on the emotions: “Talking to people, creating a little goosebumps and sometimes a tear – that’s all part of a long concert, and I really try to think through every second. I would like very much that when the viewers go home they’re like, ‘I got to know the guy a little bit better'”.
