Santo Domingo, March 13.- The Dominican singer Ángela Carrasco was awarded this Tuesday night with the Great Sovereign, the main award given to popular and classical art in the country, an award that she said: “It has been a long time since I had to having been with me.”

The performer, who triumphed in Spain and from there brought her quality to Latin America, went on stage at the Eduardo Brito National Theater with a surprised face and while holding the statuette expressed that “you wanted” to one day feel the applause and affection of his country.

«It is not easy to continue putting music in the ears of so many people. I have to say it: Everything she did and wanted was so that in my country, the Dominican Republic, she would feel proud of what Angelita did there (succeed abroad).”

After almost 50 years of career, she thanked all the people who have collaborated with her over so many years.

«Thanks to my family, my brothers, my father and my mother, who although they are no longer here (…). To my husband who has let me continue singing. To all my fellow artists,” said the singer.

The Dominican was honored musically prior to obtaining the Great Sovereign with the performance of ‘Si tú eres mi hombre’, by Martha Heredia, and ‘I want to die’, performed by Luisanna Grullón, before Carrasco herself appeared in the stage with ‘Quererte a ti’, causing shouts of approval and a standing ovation.

Emmanuel, Rubby Pérez and Natalia Jiménez

The Soberano Awards, presented by the Association of Art Chroniclers (Acroarte), awarded a International Sovereign to the Mexican Emmanuel and a Sovereign of Merit to the Dominican merenguero Rubby Pérez, who thanked Fernando Villalona and Wilfrido Vargas for giving him his first opportunities in art.

Vargas, who was remembered for the same reasons by fellow merengue player Eddy Herrera, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday following being hospitalized for a week due to pneumonia and influenza type A.

«I receive this award with honor, with joy, this is a country that welcomed me with affection since the first time I came more than 40 years ago. I am taking this award to Mexico, beautiful and dear Mexico,” said the ‘Toda la vida’ singer when taking the award from him.

Pérez, known as ‘the loudest voice of merengue’, dedicated his award to his wife, who died a year ago due to cancer. “I hope there is a quick cure for this disease,” he said sadly.

The Spanish Natalia Jiménez and her powerful voice took over the venue with the songs ‘I believe in myself’, ‘you will cry for me’ and ‘Talk to me regarding you’, accompanied by mariachis.

The multi-award winning Juan Luis Guerra won a Soberano in the category of Featured Artist Abroad and another for Best Video Clip for his song ‘Mambo 23’.

Merengue, Camila and bachata

As expected, the indigenous rhythm of the Dominican Republic, the merengue, made its presence from the beginning of the award ceremony with Los Hermanos Rosario and Toño Rosario, who made the audience dance with the lilting rhythm ‘a lo maco’, which characterizes.

Another great merengue performance of the night was that of Eddy Herrera, who took over the room with his hits ‘Carolina’, ‘Pégame tu vice’ ‘Demasiado chica’, ‘La bailadora’ and ‘Ajena’, with everyone dancing, including to the Dominican Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, former beauty queen and television personality.

The Mexican pop rock group Camila also triumphed with ‘Mientes’ and ‘Everything changed’. The trio was awarded an International Sovereign.

“We’re back, guys, our songs are for you,” said pianist and singer Mario Domm. The group reunited in 2023 following a 10-year separation.

The bachatero Zacarías Ferreira sang ‘Asesina’, one of his best-known songs, accompanied by dancers who created an avant-garde choreography of this rhythm, also authentic from the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican rapper Lápiz Conciente received a Special Sovereign and was in charge of closing the award ceremony. This artist was known for his sexually explicit lyrics and for his ‘troubles’ with others in the urban genre. In recent years, however, he has ‘softened’ the lyrics of some of his songs and is called the ‘Dad of Rap’ in the country.

The actor, director and playwright Manuel Chapuseaux, a master of Dominican theater, received a Sovereign for Lifetime Achievement and who, following finishing thanking his colleagues and his wife, said: “And finally, if I don’t say it, I’ll die, peace for Palestine.” , in the first and only political moment of the gala.

Milly Quezada, ‘the queen of merengue’ and Manny Cruz were awarded for the best collaboration of the year for the song ‘Llegaste’. Milly also won in the show of the year category with ‘Viva la Reina’.

In alternative music, the trio Solo Fernández won, while the YouTuber of the year award went to Santiago Matías (Alofoke).

For the first time, Premios Soberano was broadcast by the American Spanish-language network Univisión and, coincidence?, the first time it started right at 8:00 p.m. local time (24:00 GMT) as planned.
