Avs in pieces over von der Leyen vote. Marino and Salis immediately split –

The Alliance between the Italian Left and Green Europe in Europe is short-lived. The Avs cartel has already split over the vote for a second mandate for Ursula von der Leyen, with four of the six elected members voting in favor of the outgoing president of the European Commission, while two will say no. Repubblica reports the scenario, explaining that Ignazio Marino, Leoluca Orlando, Benedetta Scuderi and Cristina Guarda, who chose the Greens group, will be part of the new continental majority following meetings between the leaders and von der Leyen herself, who made them promises in order to find votes and avoid any surprises at the time of the vote. Mimmo Lucano and Ilaria Salis, who joined the group The Left and were elected on the SI quota, Nicola Fratoianni’s party, will instead vote once morest von der Leyen.

“In other times, a split like that would have caused upheavals. Not these days. The political project of the Left Green Alliance will go ahead anyway. The contradiction is that of a list that collected votes and then made different choices on such a delicate passage. Despite the structural alliance between Si and Ev, there is no political body of compensation, so to speak, between the two forces,” writes the newspaper.

Who then reports on the internal stomach aches in Avs. “We would have expected, in addition to a more coordinated discussion, at least an abstention from colleagues in the Greens group”, leaks from Sinistra Italiana. With Angelo Bonelli, green leader, who had already made the message clear on Sunday: “Our votes would have been necessary to avoid a shift of the majority to the right, the worst right we have ever had in Europe. I think that in the face of this risk we cannot remain indifferent. The position I take, following having spoken regarding it with the MEPs, is the following, a conditional yes for von der Leyen at various points”. In the meantime, the rift remains: is an alliance that is divided on such a crucial vote really respectful of the voters’ mandate?
