Today (23) the 65th anniversary of the 823 artillery battle, KMT presidential candidate Hou Youyi, President Tsai Ing-wen, and People’s Party candidate Ke Wenzhe all attended relevant commemorative activities. Former Taipei Mayor Hao Longbin also took advantage of 823 to speak out, mentioning that his father Hao Baicun had been preparing for war all his life, but he was most afraid of starting a war. He called on politicians not to be afraid of slander and smear, and to contact the mainland to ease the cross-strait situation and avoid war.
Hao Longbin posted on Facebook on the evening of the 22nd that the August 23rd Artillery Battle was a key battle for the Republic of China. For every square meter of land that year, 60 shells were dropped, which shows the tragic situation of the battle. Every time my father went to Kinmen, he would go to Taiwu Mountain and Xiao Kinmen Cemetery to pay tribute to his comrades. Because without the hard work and sacrifice of the frontline soldiers and civilians, there would be no economic development, democracy and freedom in Taiwan today.
Hao Longbin mentioned that his father, Hao Bocun, often said that although he has been preparing for war all his life, what he fears most is starting a war, because anyone who has experienced war knows the horror of war. Hao Longbin also cited Ukraine as an example. During the one-and-a-half year Russo-Ukraine war, there were heavy casualties, the country was devastated, and one quarter of its citizens became refugees. The international community believes that Taiwan is the most dangerous place outside of Ukraine. If there is a war between the two sides of the strait, there will be no front or rear in Taiwan, and there will be battlefields everywhere. If a war breaks out, the consequences will be disastrous.
