Avoid Doping Accusations, Athletes Expected to Check Types of Prescribed Drugs

AHEAD of the 21st Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) 2024 which will start in early September 2024, athletes must prepare their physical and mental health.

Discipline in training and maintaining nutritional intake is one of the supporting factors to achieve achievements. In order to maintain health and be able to participate in various competitions, athletes must be careful in consuming drugs even for medical purposes. Because, it is possible that the drugs consumed contain doping substances.

Quoting from the website of the Aceh Provincial Youth and Sports Service, doping is an effort to improve performance by using substances or methods that are prohibited in sports and are not related to medical indications.

The prohibition of doping is because it is contrary to the philosophy and ethics of sports. The principles of honesty and sportsmanship of sports are violated and can endanger the health of athletes.

“It is difficult to know whether a drug preparation contains doping substances or not, it is necessary to identify the type of drugs prescribed,” said Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Staff of Science and Technology, Research and Development of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Dr.rer.nat. apt. Arko Jatmiko Wicaksono, M.Sc., as quoted from the official UGM website, Tuesday (27/8).

Arko reminded athletes to be more careful in consuming drugs containing doping substances. Because, those who are proven to consume doping substances will be sanctioned.

“In the 2021 PON, 3 gold medal winners, 1 silver medal winner, and 1 bronze medal winner (proven to have consumed doping) had their wins revoked, were asked to return all the prizes received along with their bonuses, and were given a suspension of up to 4 years,” said Arko. (M-3)
