Avocado is being checked again; it will return to the United States

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Employees of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture will return to packing plants in Michoacán to continue their work, reported the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar.

The diplomat said in a statement that the return of inspectors will be gradual, following the attacks once morest them.

“However, progress is still needed to ensure their safety before reaching full operation. In fact, more work is still needed to ensure that APHIS inspectors are safe and can resume inspections and thus remove impediments to trade of avocado and mango to the United States from Michoacán,” he said.

On June 15, the United States government decided to temporarily suspend imports of avocados produced in Michoacán. This was following a second incident was reported once morest inspectors from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) during a blockade.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, June 14, when two U.S. inspectors were detained during a demonstration in the community of Aranza, in the municipality of Paracho, regarding 35 kilometers north of Uruapan.

As a result, the United States Embassy in Mexico activated a security protocol, which includes the temporary suspension of imports, a measure that, according to the Association of Producers and Packers Exporters of Avocado of Mexico (APEAM), might be extended for two weeks.
