Landmarks around the world turn off their lights for one hour – a sign of more environmental and climate protection – WWF Austria invites you to take part +++ Pictures and original sounds
Vienna (OTS) – On Saturday, March 23rd, the traditional “WWF Earth Hour” takes place – a global environmental protection campaign by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). For the 17th time, the lights will go out around the globe for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., in the spirit of climate and environmental protection – from well-known landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Private individuals, companies and communities are also invited to take part and draw attention to the urgency of nature and climate protection. “Millions of people around the world are sending a strong signal to politicians around the world at WWF Earth Hour – because they have a responsibility to work to protect our nature and habitats,” says Julia Haslinger from WWF Austria.
This year, the environmental protection organization is placing particular focus on the topic of sustainable nutrition: “Our diet is a real superpower in the fight once morest the climate crisis and global species extinction. By opting for an increasingly plant-based diet, we are not only setting an example, but also contributing directly to climate protection,” says Julia Haslinger, expert in sustainable nutrition at WWF Austria. Up to 37 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the production, processing and waste of our food. Animal foods such as meat, fish and dairy products in particular have a massive impact on the climate and environment. “In the fight once morest the climate crisis and the global extinction of species, awareness of the positive effects of a climate-friendly diet is crucial. That’s what we want to convey at this year’s WWF Earth Hour,” says Haslinger.
About WWF Earth Hour:
WWF Earth Hour has developed into one of the world’s largest climate and environmental protection campaigns. Not only in Austria, but all over the world, the lights are symbolically switched off for an hour (e.g. at landmarks or public buildings) and actions are taken to protect nature and the climate. Private individuals, companies and communities are invited to send a common signal to politicians.
