On the 28th of last month, avian influenza virus was detected in the carcass of a wild buzzard found in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
On the 4th, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced that subsequent detailed testing by the National Institute for Environmental Studies detected the H5 subtype, a highly infectious and highly pathogenic virus.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this is the third case of a highly pathogenic virus detected in wild birds in Tokyo, and so far, no other wild birds have been confirmed to have been infected.
The Tokyo metropolitan government will strengthen its wild bird monitoring system in 23 wards of Tokyo, in addition to a 10-kilometer radius of where the buzzard carcass was found, to check for infected wild birds.
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, “Avian influenza viruses are not thought to be contagious to humans unless there is close contact with infected birds. Please contact your local municipality.”
