A teenager has just tested positive for H5N1 in the province of Kratié. Cambodia has already reported three deaths from avian flu since the start of the year.

The epidemiological situation

A press release from the Ministry of Health reports a case of H5N1 avian flu in a 16-year-old boy in the province of Kratié. This is the older brother of a child, aged nine, who died from the same virus a few days earlier. This is the fourth case of bird flu this year in the country.

Since the start of the year, the ministry has recorded three deaths: an 11-year-old girl in Kandal province, a two-year-old girl and a 50-year-old man in Prey Veng province.

Measures taken by the authorities

Local authorities have taken measures to inform and raise awareness among the population, including students, about the virus and means of prevention. Tests were carried out on all people who had been in contact with the victims.

H5N1 flu normally spreads among poultry and can sometimes be transmitted to humans, hence the government’s precautionary message inviting people to wash their hands before eating and not to consume sick poultry.

Prevention and recommendations

The Ministry of Health invites you to consult a health center if symptoms appear after being in contact with infected or dead poultry.

The Ministry of Agriculture stressed the importance of preventing the spread of viruses, including strengthening surveillance measures for animal and meat transportation, spraying disinfectants, strengthening education and research, and controlling the import and export of animal products.
