Bitter pill for the Atlanta Falcons: Punt returner Avery Williams will probably miss the 2023 NFL season because of a serious knee injury.

As coach Arthur Smith confirmed in a press round on Wednesday, Williams “probably ran this year”. The 24-year-old sustained a cruciate ligament injury during the OTAs opener last Friday and will be operated on later this week.

Smith sees it as a “good sign” that the surgery scheduled for Thursday will be carried out less than a week following the injury: “We love Avery. He has the right mindset and we assume that he will come back with fresh energy.”

Williams is one of the best returners in the NFL, averaging 16.2 yards on punt returns and 19.6 yards on kick returns. As a running back, he also had 109 yards and a touchdown last season. There were also 61 receiving yards.

Williams began his career as a college cornerback at Boise State. In the 2021 draft, the Falcons secured his services in the fifth round.
