‘Avatar: the way of the water’ is on the way to becoming the biggest success of the year at the cinema in France. According to figures compiled by Disney on Thursday, more than 6.1 million spectators had boarded the Pandora star since its release on December 14.
During the school holidays, the film attracted more than 500,000 spectators a day, a frenetic pace which should allow it to dethrone ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and its 6.76 million admissions achieved since May.
If no one dares to bet on its final score, ‘Avatar’ should continue to achieve several million admissions at the start of 2023. The first part, 13 years ago, attracted a total of 14.7 million spectators.
More selective audience
Something to put a smile on the face of cinema operators, following a year 2022, where part of the public was still lacking. “The whole public returned to the theater, but by being more selective”, analyzes Éric Marti, box office specialist at Comscore.
American films were a ‘engine’, when on the French side, only films ‘with a certain originality’ resisted, to the detriment of big comedies for example, he adds. However, France is doing better than other countries such as South Korea, the United Kingdom or especially Italy.
“The year ends better than it started”, tempers the general delegate of the federation of French cinemas, Marc-Olivier Sebbag: “We are very optimistic for 2023, where we will finally find a film offer comparable to the years of ‘before the crisis’, he explains.
