Avatar 2’s first day of release in China is sluggish… Impact of the spread of COVID-19

Box office revenue of 20 billion won… The first half of the first half of the first half of the box office of Chinese films

Local media such as the Stock Times reported on the 16th that James Cameron’s blockbuster film ‘Avatar: Water Road’ (Avatar 2) had poor box office performance on its first day of release in China due to the spread of Corona 19.

According to Maoyan, an online ticket sales platform, Avatar 2 earned 110 million yuan (regarding 20.6 billion won) in box office revenue across China as of 7:00 pm on the first day of its release.

Avatar 2’s revenue on this day accounted for 98% of all movie screenings in China, ranking first, but the local media evaluated that it fell short of expectations.

The patriotic film ‘Changjin Lake’ (205.2 million yuan), which opened in September last year and caused a box office sensation, and the follow-up ‘Changjin Lake Watergate’ (6411.2 billion yuan), released in February this year, are far below the opening day earnings. Of course, in the first half of this year, the first day’s opening income of Chinese films was only regarding half of the 200 million yuan (37.5 billion won).

'Avatar 2' first day box office performance in China...

The Securities Times said, “A box office blast was expected due to high interest before the release, but ticket sales were low in most regions due to the influence of Corona 19.”

Local media observed that it would not be easy to continue the box office performance of Avatar 1 considering the reality that it is difficult to expect Corona 19 to calm down immediately, saying, “The success of Avatar 2 in China depends on the situation of Corona 19.”

Unlike at the time of the release of the previous work, there is also an analysis that the reality of sharp conflict between the United States and China can affect the box office of Avatar 2.

Avatar 1, which was released in mainland China in 2010, earned 1.339 billion yuan at the box office, and also earned more than 160 million yuan when re-screened in March last year, totaling more than 1.5 billion yuan (approximately 283.5 billion won). It recorded a box office score.

Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province, which boasts a superb view of strangely shaped rocks that became the background of the floating island in the movie ‘Hallelujah’, has been called ‘Avatar’ and has become a world-class tourist attraction.
