Avangard’s Delayed Life Syndrome: The Search for a Winning Coach Continues

2023-05-25 02:55:00

“We’ll go on vacation when we pay off the mortgage”

“Let’s have children when we get on our feet”

“Well, maybe after the holidays…”

You must have said something similar yourself. Or heard from friends/acquaintances/relatives. Such excuses have a unifying term – “delayed life syndrome.” People suffering from this syndrome sincerely and unconsciously believe that they are not yet living their real life, but are only preparing for it. In fact, wasting the best years of your life in vain.

But those are people. Can entire organizations suffer from such a “disease”? The situation that is developing in Avangard gives a positive answer. There, a person was appointed head coach who had already coached the team last season and, it seems, had to leave it. However, trying to persuade Bob Hartley or get another foreign coach, the Hawks failed.

It is unlikely that anyone will argue that the bet on Kravets is forced. Cheap, familiar, cheerful, relatively reliable. Plan B in its classical form. Mikhail Grigorievich is characterized as a “class man”. He built a trusting relationship with the players. Untie the hands of the leaders. He did a lot for Avangard, stabilizing the game at a critical moment. But… not an eagle.

To say about him “the coach is not for big tasks” is to offend. But his entire past coaching path speaks of this. There have been no rebuttals yet. The series with Ak Bars showed the tactical scarcity of Kravets. At least in the confrontation with such a master as Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, he did not find the keys to the opponent, did not rebuild the game of his team.

The problem is that Kravets, who took over the team during the season, and Kravets, who has been preparing it since the off-season, are also slightly different coaches. We don’t know yet how good he is at laying the foundation. Moreover, the “Vanguard” left the physical training coach Brandon Bovey. And in general, the updated headquarters of Kravets – Svitov – Saifullin – Makritsky – Zvyagin, with the exception of the goalkeeping coach, looks very poor. True, vacant

At the same time, Kravets is an inexpensive specialist who will not ask for a large salary for himself, and will not require a star team. There is work – it’s good. Leaving him, in Omsk they do not destroy everything to the ground, but they are not ready to build a new team for years. What the term of the contract with Kravets hints at is one year. The coach, and without extending it and not saying goodbye to him immediately after the end of the playoffs, as if they made it clear that he was a fallback. And now they almost directly said that you are a temporary worker. Until we find a better one.

And this is happening in Omsk for the second off-season in a row. The option with Ryabykin did not arise because he was the ideal candidate for the role of Hartley’s successor. It was then that he was molded into a diligent student, Bob, who was destined to pave his business. Initially, the Avangard big boss Krylov dreamed of Babcock and Quenneville. They tried to build bridges with them. And until February 24, 2022, it didn’t even seem impossible. Then there was the outcast candidate Volkova Skabelka. Well, Ryabykin was eventually chosen as a compromise candidate. Neither ours nor yours.

Now everything has happened again. It was not possible to find suitable foreign coaches who were ready to come to Russia. The Russian market is empty. There is a free Ilya Vorobyov, but he needs strong assistants, and some kind of carte blanche, and the defeat of his Magnitogorsk from Avangard Kravets speaks against this specialist. The appointment of Vorobyov would have looked illogical, it would have been difficult to explain him, but it is quite obvious that he is stronger than Kravets as a coach.

Avangard’s postponed life syndrome lies in the belief that it is possible to win the Gagarin Cup, and simply build a serious team, with a personality of Hartley’s scale. Or with Hartley himself. And all the rest are half-measures. Long negotiations were held with Bob, but they reached a dead end. The coach, who made the Omsk club a champion, refers either to the desire to be with his grandchildren, or to the construction of houses. They did not find another Canadian coach in Omsk, who, firstly, corresponds to the ambitions of Avangard, and secondly, is ready to go to Russia. All this is preparation for the bright future of Omsk, which will come when Bob says yes. Well, or Babcock will run out of money from his contract with Toronto. This will happen, however, not soon.
