In Tyrol, the avalanche danger continues to rise. The avalanche warning service issued warning level four on the five-part scale for large parts of Tyrol above the tree line, so there is great danger. Fresh snow and a stormy north-west wind are responsible for this. As a result, extensive snowdrift accumulations form, according to the experts.
“Avalanches can be triggered easily or go off spontaneously. In places, avalanches can sweep away the weak old snow and become large. Remote triggering is possible,” according to the avalanche report. In addition, the danger spots are often and with poor visibility – as forecast for today – hardly recognizable. Gliding snow avalanches and slides are also to be expected. “The current avalanche situation requires a lot of experience in assessing the avalanche danger and great restraint,” it said.
In the past few days, the delicate avalanche situation has led to around 100 departures, resulting in 70 avalanche operations. Many accidents involving winter sports enthusiasts went unharmed, but nine people lost their lives under the snow masses in Austria over the weekend.
