Avalanche in Tyrol claimed one life

A ski tourer died in an avalanche in the municipality of St. Sigmund im Sellrain (Innsbruck-Land district) late on Saturday morning. It was buried by masses of snow on the Gaiskogel (Stubai Alps, 2,820 meters), the police said in response to an APA inquiry. According to information from the krone.at portal, the person who died in the accident was a woman from Germany. Confirmation of this from the police was still pending.

The avalanche alarm was raised at 11:46 a.m. A search operation was launched involving a helicopter and dog handlers. The woman was found in the snow in the early followingnoon, but she might only be rescued dead. The avalanche danger in Tyrol was classified as moderate (warning level 2) on Saturday, but according to the warning service, individual people were already able to trigger a snow slab, especially at high altitudes. During the day, several avalanches were reported, in which winter sports enthusiasts were also hit – but they escaped with their lives.

Also in St. Sigmund im Sellrain, an avalanche occurred on the Kraspesspitze (2,953 meters) shortly before 12.30 p.m. Three tourers were buried and were able to free themselves from the snow masses. At 11:22 a.m. there was an alarm regarding an avalanche in Kaisers (Reutte district). On the Alples-Pleis-Spitze (Lechtal Alps, 2,648 meters), a group of three released a slab of snow regarding 100 meters wide around 200 meters below the summit. This took away two men aged 45 and 43. The duo freed themselves from the avalanche and remained uninjured.

Further avalanches were reported following 2 p.m. in the communities of Kaunertal (Landeck district) and Neustift im Stubaital (Innsbruck-Land district). But no one was dragged away or buried.
