The woman was buried by masses of snow on the Gaiskogel (Stubai Alps, 2,820 meters).
The avalanche alarm was raised at 11:46 a.m. A search operation was launched involving a helicopter and dog handlers.
Several avalanches
The person was found in the snow in the early followingnoon, but might only be rescued dead. The avalanche danger in Tyrol was classified as moderate (warning level 2) on Saturday, but according to the warning service, individual people were already able to trigger a snow slab, especially at high altitudes.
During the day, several avalanches were reported, in which winter sports enthusiasts were also hit – but they escaped with their lives.
