At least five mountaineers have died in snowstorm-triggered avalanches in western Iran. According to a report by the state news agency IRNA on Saturday, the bodies of five of the nine mountaineers have already been recovered by rescue workers.
The accident occurred on Friday in the heights of San Baran in the Zagros Mountains in Lorestan Province, which mountaineers also call Iran’s Alps. According to IRNA, four other injured people were taken to hospital. Other media reported eight deaths and one survivor. This information had not been confirmed as of Saturday morning.
