Avalanche at Passo Gardena: the road remains closed – Pusteria Gardena Badia

2023-05-03 18:07:33

Gardena pass. The road to Passo Gardena remains closed for safety reasons for a couple more days following an avalanche fell on Monday 1 May in the followingnoon which, fortunately, did not hit any passing cars. The mass of snow has detached itself from above on the plain that precedes the last hairpin bends that lead to the pass.

It was regarding 20 meters long and at least two meters high. The intervention of the Selva firefighters and the men of the Road Service was timely. After ascertaining that no one had been buried by the snow mass, the road was declared accessible. However, it remains closed to traffic at least until the avalanche commission gives a favorable opinion for reopening.

The rise in temperatures in recent days has made the slope at risk that characterizes the straight and threatens to make more snow fall downstream. An extremely dangerous situation which makes traffic to and from the pass problematic.

The temperature has risen, the risk of avalanches has therefore increased. Most of the tourists have left, but the problem remains more acute than ever with considerable inconvenience for the many who have to reach the Gardena from the Badia for work or study.

The road linking the Badia and Gardena is important. Keeping it closed inevitably means creating a lot of problems for the two valley communities. The provincial councilor for mobility Daniel Alfreider also recently asked the technicians to draw up a study on what concrete possibilities there are to avoid closures – both in summer and in winter – due to environmental emergencies. The technicians of the Provincial Infrastructure Division and the Roads Office have already provided their general indications. There are three solutions: the construction of an avalanche tunnel in the straight section that passes under the rocky ridge where landslides and avalanches usually occur, a series of canopies in the same section that ends before the last hairpin bends preceding the pass, the relocation of the roadway further south starting from Cafè Gerard . The provincial technicians are working on the proposal for the canopies, which from an environmental point of view would not be an eyesore and would cost less economically. But there is a problem to solve: in the area there are some sources of water for Selva and a solution appears difficult.
