– The 2023 edition of the Geneva Motor Show is canceled
The event should have taken place at Palexpo in February 2023. The organizers cite economic and geopolitical reasons.
The Geneva International Motor Show (Gims) will not be held in Geneva in February 2023. The organizers mention global geopolitical and economic uncertainties, which have prevented many brands from getting involved.
“Due to the uncertainties weighing on the global economy and geopolitics, as well as the risks associated with the evolution of the pandemic, the organizers have decided to focus exclusively in 2023 on the planning of the event in Doha” , explains Maurice Turrettini, President of the foundation of the Geneva International Motor Show, quoted in a press release.
This decision, taken by the members of the Committee and the Council of the foundation during a meeting Thursday in Bern, was adopted so as not to jeopardize the event and the economic viability of the foundation. “The impact is less by making the decision now than later,” notes the general manager of the Geneva International Motor Show (Gims), Sandro Mesquita, during an interview with Keystone-ATS.
Too high risks
Novelties were not yet available for the next edition and as a result of the bad economic situation, there were fewer registrations for 2023, explains Mr. Mesquita. “In these uncertain times, many brands are unable to commit to attending a show in Europe in winter.”
“The format developed and the project for Geneva have been very well received. But in the end, the risks were far too great,” says Turrettini. For Sandro Mesquita, it is essential, for reasons of reputation, to offer a show that meets visitors’ expectations and offers the same outfit as usual, which was not possible next year.
No decision yet for 2024
The Geneva Motor Show was originally scheduled to be held from February 14 to 19, 2023 at Palexpo. The first edition in Doha, Qatar will take place in November 2023. “Our Doha platform has the greatest potential for success next year. Its format, in particular allowing the vehicles to be put into action, responds to a demand from brands,” notes Mr. Mesquita. The event is scheduled every two years.
Sandro Mesquita points out that no decision has yet been made for the 2024 edition in Geneva. “The first echoes are however reassuring and the trend positive. We expect a more interesting recovery for the automotive sector for the end of 2023/beginning of 2024”, he concludes.
