Vinci Autoroutes has just published the very first study to measure solo driving in France. More than 8 out of 10 drivers travel alone in their daily journeys.

Vinci Autoroutes unveiled this Saturday, April 23 the results of the very first study on solo driving in France. For this, the number of occupants of more than 1.5 million vehicles, traveling on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. near eleven French cities, was analyzed by an artificial intelligence algorithm. Result: more than 8 out of 10 drivers travel alone as part of their daily journeys. With an average autosolism peak of 89% at 8 a.m.

Observations also show that the number of cars carrying more than 2 people increases throughout the morning while the total traffic decreases. In other words, it is when it is the most penalizing, namely during peak hours, that solo driving is also the most practiced.

“Stimulating the development of shared mobility – starting with carpooling – at peak times, therefore has a direct and significant impact on the fluidity of traffic, and therefore the reduction of CO2 emissions”, indicates Vinci Autoroutes in its press release.

In addition, the barometer highlights significant variations depending on the territories observed. The highest average rates of soloists are found on the A11 north of Nantes (93.1%), the A10 in Tours (87.1%) and the A64 in Toulouse (86.5%). Conversely, it is on the A83, to the south of Nantes, and on the A8, at the level of the agglomerations of Nice and Aix-en Provence, that we observe the highest carpooling rates : up to 1 trip out of 4 on average.
