Automobile manufacturing is necessary to support the recovery of the national economy

ORAN – Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Ali Aoun affirmed Monday in the wilaya of Oran that automobile manufacturing was a necessity for the support of different sectors and the revival of the national economy.

Speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of the automobile factory of the Italian brand Fiat in the industrial zone of Tafraoui, the minister indicated that “the attraction of foreign investment in automobile manufacturing is today the one of our priorities, as a necessity for the support of different sectors and the revival of the national economy”.

He added that “from this point of view, several win-win partnership contracts will be signed, in order to gain experience in this area, train a qualified workforce and work on the integration of production of parts and components to achieve a significant integration rate, in order to market the +Made in Algeria+ car”, stressing that “from now on, any assembly project of parts and components without added value is unacceptable”.

Mr. Aoun indicated that the launch of this project will be followed by other similar projects which “meet the standards of integration and added value in a sustainable future.”

He specified that this project is part of the State’s efforts aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and partnership between Algeria and Italy in various sectors of activity in general and in the mechanical industry in particularly, following the recent visit made by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to Italy at the invitation of his counterpart Sergio Mattarella, with the aim of strengthening friendly and historic bilateral relations.

The minister estimated that “the choice of this day, coinciding with the commemoration of the 63rd anniversary of the demonstrations of December 11, 1960 to inaugurate the Fiat factory, is a starting point for a real industry in the field of automobiles in our country, with the contribution of one of our Italian partners”.

The Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production said that “in addition to the good reputation enjoyed by the Italian car manufacturer Fiat, this brand will be the first to be manufactured locally, given that the Italian company has committed to achieving integration rates that meet development requirements and specifications.

Mr. Aoun also stressed “the need to respect the commitments made by the factory and we undertake, as public authorities, to ensure support for all investment projects aimed at creating wealth and job opportunities.”

Furthermore, a letter of intent for the extension of the industrial project of the “Stellantis” group in Algeria was signed between the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production and the group to increase the production capacity of this factory, which will be oriented towards the local market and export.

The first 100% Algerian “Fiat 500” type vehicle, produced by the Fiat Tafraoui factory, was marketed.

As a reminder, the inauguration ceremony of this factory in the industrial zone of Tafraoui took place in the presence of the Italian Deputy Minister of Enterprise and “Made in Italy”, Valentino Valentini, and the General Director of the group Stellantis to which the Fiat brand belongs, Carlos Tafriz, and the Italian ambassador to Algeria, Giovanni Pugliese.

This structuring project was carried out in record time and work to bring it to fruition was launched in November 2022, following the signing of the framework agreement in October 2022 between the Ministry of Industry and the Stellantis group, which occupies the 4th place in the world in the automobile industry and has 12 brands including Fiat.

The framework agreement signed between the two parties emphasizes the need to develop industrial activities linked to automobile manufacturing, following-sales service, spare parts, as well as the development of the construction sector. automobile in Algeria.

The implementation of the framework agreement took place following the publication of Decree 22-384 dated November 17, 2022, legal framework encompassing the conditions and measures linked to activities related to automobile manufacturing, defining a new specifications intended for importers and car manufacturers.

The Stellantis group announced that the initial production capacity of the factory is estimated at 60,000 vehicles per year, in a first phase, and will reach 90,000 vehicles per year in a second phase (in 2028).

The Fiat Tafraoui automobile plant will produce three types of vehicles (models) until 2026, while production of the fourth type will begin in 2029.

The factory employed 300 workers during the current year, and another 300 are expected to be employed in 2024, a large part of whom were trained as part of a cooperation program between the company “Stellantis” and the Vocational Training and Education sector.
