The end of the systematic printing of the receipt in paper came into force at the beginning of August, in France. And in Belgium? Wallonia takes the lead.
From this Thursday, August 10, Wallonia will put an end to the automatic printing of receipts. It will of course always be possible to request it. “A transition period is planned to allow traders to adapt”, declared the spokesperson for the Walloon Minister of the Environment, Céline Tellier (Ecolo), to our colleagues from the media Gondola.
In some cases, a ticket remains systematically printed: at the restaurant or at the hotel, when the guarantee must be recalled on the ticket, for canceled operations or even when the ticket relates to a provision of services.
In the name of ecology?
This measure is taken in the name of ecology. In Belgium, five billion tickets are printed every year, which would correspond to four million trees cut down. The measure is criticized by some. The environmental benefit is not guaranteed, the digitized ticket consumes less water, but produces more carbon, due to the storage of data.
Others point out that receipts are a family budget management tool for many householdsto verify the accuracy of the transaction amount.
And elsewhere in Belgium?
Brussels seems to be at a standstill on this issue, Flanders has launched discussions. Some have taken the lead, such as the Delhaize brands, which have been offering a digital ticket since 2022, via their application, and Colruyt, which also offers the electronic format for online shopping. From an ecological point of view, other brands offer not to take a ticket at all.
